I2R Group Director, Matthew Quarisa recently visited a local primary school, St Mary’s in Yoogali,  to help Year 6 students on an important community service project they are working on. The SolarBuddy community service project was a suggestion from Mrs Bronwyn Carusi, president of the school council.

SolarBuddy Ltd is an Australian registered charity with the goal to end energy poverty, by educating Australian children about energy poverty, renewable energy and global citizenship. A core feature of the program is for Australian students to build solar power portable lights which are sent to disadvantaged communities across the world.

The project was funded by the School Council who arranged Matthew to visit the class and talk to the children about the power of solar including how solar panels and solar batteries work. He also assisted the students to construct the lights.

Students wrote personal letters and attached them to the lights. Once received, the recipients will send pictures of the lights being used and show how the gesture has helped their community. For more information about Solar Buddy initiative visit www.solarbuddy.org
