I2R is all about innovation! At our recent Toolbox Talk we had John and Matt join us to share the stories of their their much loved cars.

With nearly a century of evolution between the T-Model Ford and the Tesla, John and Matt illustrated how both vehicles were born out of desire to innovate and revolutionise technology with transition from horse power, to petrol power and now to electric power in the automobile industry.

This event not only inspired our staff, but also underscored the significance of leveraging cutting-edge technology to propel our business and improve customer outcomes.

The Evolution of Automation in the Automotive Industry.

The automotive industry has undergone a remarkable transformation over the past century. The journey from the Ford Model T to the cutting-edge electric vehicles produced by Tesla is a testament to the incredible progress that automation, power and energy control has brought to the sector.

Inspired by Matt and John’s presentation, this article will explore the evolution of automation in the automotive industry, tracing the path from Henry Ford’s iconic T-Model Ford to the technological marvels of Tesla.

The T-Model Ford: Pioneering Mass Production

At the turn of the 20th century, Henry Ford introduced the Model T, a vehicle that would become a symbol of the industrial age. The Model T’s production was revolutionary for its time, thanks to the implementation of assembly line manufacturing techniques. While it wasn’t fully automated by today’s standards, it marked a significant step forward in the industry. The assembly line drastically reduced production time and costs, making cars more affordable and accessible to the average American.

The assembly line concept introduced by Ford was an early form of process control and automation, emphasising the division of labor and efficient, sequential production.

The workers played crucial roles in this process, but the machines and conveyors powered by electric motors made the work more efficient. This marked the beginning of the automation era in the automotive industry and beyond.

Tesla: A New Era of Control and Automation

Fast forward to the 21st century, and Tesla, founded by Elon Musk, has redefined the automotive landscape.

Tesla’s electric vehicles (EVs) incorporate cutting-edge automation technologies, influencing not only the auto industry but also the broader tech sector. Tesla’s approach to automation can be divided into several key areas:

Autonomous Driving: Tesla is at the forefront of autonomous vehicle development. Through its Autopilot system and Full Self-Driving (FSD) features, Tesla’s cars are capable of increasingly advanced levels of automation. These systems use a combination of sensors, cameras, and powerful onboard computers to enable features like self-parking, adaptive cruise control, and even autonomous highway driving.

Advanced Manufacturing: Tesla’s manufacturing facilities are a testament to automation. The company has introduced advanced robotic systems and artificial intelligence (AI) into its production lines, enhancing efficiency and precision. Robots work alongside humans in these “Gigafactories” to assemble intricate components and ensure the highest quality standards.

Over-the-Air Updates: Tesla’s cars can receive over-the-air (OTA) software updates, much like a smartphone. This continuous improvement through software updates is a groundbreaking approach in the automotive industry, allowing Tesla to improve performance, add new features, and fix bugs remotely.

Sustainable Production: Tesla is not just revolutionising vehicle automation but also contributing to a greener future. Their Gigafactories incorporate renewable energy sources, like solar panels and wind turbines, along with efficient energy management systems to minimise environmental impact.
